Gravel roofs have been a trusted industry standard for decades, particularly on buildings that have flat or low-sloped roofs. Gravel roofs are installed through a “build-up” process, which involves the layering of multiple materials: the base sheet, a waterproofing membrane, and a protective surface layer. The surface layer is typically made of gravel or crushed stone, although sometimes people use river rock or marble chips. The final gravel layer is important to protect and weigh down the underlying layers.

Although it may sound like a gravel roof can simply blow away in the wind, the gravel is embedded into the sticky membrane to keep it in place. However, it can be dislodged by particularly strong winds or someone walking on it, so regular inspections and maintenance are important. Gravel roofs, if well-installed and cared for, can last anywhere from 15 to 30 years. They hold up well in most weather conditions, are waterproof and durable, and can even offer a degree of fire resistance.
